At Touchstone Health Services, our Psychiatrists and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) provide compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care for children, teens, and families. Every treatment plan is individualized, trauma-informed, and strengths-based. Psychiatric care is offered as part of Touchstone’s broader system of support, which includes therapy, community-based programs, and family services—helping children thrive at home, in school, and in the community.
Length: About 60 minutes
Provider: Psychiatrist (MD) or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
All families begin with a psychiatric evaluation. During this first visit, your provider will review medical and mental health history, current concerns, and treatment goals. A diagnosis is always provided at the initial appointment. Sometimes, this diagnosis is provisional until more information can be gathered through follow-up visits or collateral sources (such as schools or primary care providers). The treatment plan is then developed from this diagnostic understanding and may include therapy, medication, or both. Medication is never required—and in some cases, it may not be recommended at all.
Please note that our psychiatric providers do not perform learning disability assessments, neurological or psychological testing (including psychosexual, forensic, or court-related evaluations), or brain mapping and genetic testing.
Ongoing Care
Medication Monitoring: Follow-up visits, typically 20 minutes, focus on progress, side effects, and prescription adjustments if needed.
Consultations: Longer visits, usually 30 minutes, allow time for collaboration with families, schools, and other care team members to ensure consistency of care.
What to Expect After the First Appointment: Most families return for their first follow-up within 2–4 weeks, depending on clinical needs. Frequency is individualized and may decrease as stability improves.
Psychiatric services are available in person at our Phoenix or Avondale offices, though most appointments are delivered through secure telehealth for convenience and accessibility. Families can choose the option that works best for them, and providers will help determine which format is most appropriate based on clinical needs and availability.
